Why don't we start with Japan. K: I'm sure you've heard how KFC is a much sought-after food apart from the usual Christmas cake, right? How about in America or in the Philippines? M: In the Philippines, we have what we call Christmas ham. It's usually served with cake as well. K: And in America? I saw programs that show people slicing up turkey during their Christmas dinner. M: Well, those are mostly leftovers from Thanksgiving, seeing how huge turkeys are and with Thanksgiving being so close to Christmas. K: Yeah. A good-sized turkey could feed like ten people. M: I'm curious, though, when fried chicken became a sort of go-to meal. Did your parents have that when they were kids? K: It's pretty much like the commercialization of Valentine's to sell chocolate. My parents told me KFC promoted fried chicken as a Christmas meal way back in the 70s. M: Wow! That long ago eh? K: Yes. They said it even had some kind of promotional tag line. M: Hmmm...must be something catchy for it to really stick. K: Oh I remember! It's "Kentucky for Christmas"! M: That's it?!? That caught on?!? K: Apparently. The long restaurant queues are proof of that. M: Right! I did see a couple stores yesterday. It's unbelievable. K: I'd still take fried chicken over turkey any day of the week. M: Twice on Sunday.
