A GV and a learner are talking about unusual food combinations
J: I was reading one of my mom’s American magazines.
And in that magazine I read about a new hamburger.
H: OK.
J: This new hamburger really takes the cake.
It’s a big beef burger,
and they put sharp cheddar cheese and two slices of bacon…
H: What?!.. What is sharp cheddar cheese?
J: A sharp cheese is a cheese that has a strong flavor.
So cheese can be mild or sharp.
H: Right. You'd think that the opposite would be "dull,"
but you don't talk about a dull cheese or "blunt" cheese. (smirks)
J: Exactly. So sharp cheddar cheese. But anyway,
back to the burger, the main ingredient is actually a glazed donut.
The donut is the bun!
H: That sounds horrendous!
J: I thought it was a joke when I first read about it.
I thought it must be a joke but apparently it's true.
H: It really makes me wonder, you know, they have this,
um this kind of, stereotype of American people being fat.
J: Right. I just wonder, how would someone even come up
with that, the idea of using a donut as a hamburger bun.
H: I can't even begin to fathom what it would taste like.
You know, I have no frame of reference. My taste buds
cannot picture it, you know, I have an image of a donut
in my head and an image of a nice juicy hamburger with
a couple of strips of bacon on. Combining a hamburger
with a donut is pretty loony.
J: Yeah, but I guess it's kind of like putting pineapple
on your pizza. You know, some people think that's
just an aberration. But there's something about the sweet,
tart pineapple combined with the salty, savory ingredients
of a pizza that is actually…I like it.
H: Well, I guess it's like having gammon and pineapple,
you know, the thick cut of ham which is… in fact we should
finish this class right now because I want to go to the store
and get some bacon and some hamburger because
I'm getting hungry now.
J: Lucky you! We’re right on time. Let’s go get some burgers.

ガヴァナーとラーナーが、珍しい食べ物の組み合わせについて
話しています。
J: 母のアメリカの雑誌を読んでたんだけど、
その雑誌に、新しいハンバーガーのことが書いてあったんだ。
H：ふーん。
J：この新しいハンバーガーは本当にすごいんだよ。
大きなビーフバーガーに、シャープチェダーチーズとベーコンを
2枚入れて...。
H：えっ！？シャープ・チェダー・チーズって何なの？
J：シャープチーズとは、味が強いチーズのことだよ。
チーズにはマイルドなものとシャープなものがあるんだよ。
H：そうなんだ。その反対は「鈍い」だと思うだろうけど、
鈍いチーズや「鈍い」チーズとは言わないよね。(にっこり)
J：その通りだよ。だから、シャープなチェダーチーズだよ。
でも、バーガーの話に戻ると、メインの具材は実は
艶のあるドーナツなんだ。ドーナツがバンズなんだよ！
H：それ怖いー！
J：最初に読んだときは、ジョークだと思ったよ。
冗談に違いないと思っていたけど、どうやら本当みたい。
H：本当に不思議だわー、アメリカ人は太っているという
固定観念があるからね。
J：そうだね。ドーナツをハンバーガーのバンズにするなんて、
誰がどうやって思いついたのか不思議です。
H：どんな味がするのか、想像もつかないわ。参考になるものがないわよね。
頭の中にはドーナツのイメージと、ベーコンを2枚はさんだジューシーな
ハンバーガーのイメージがあるんだけど。ハンバーガーとドーナツを
組み合わせるなんて、かなり変よね。
J：そうだね。でも、ピザにパイナップルを乗せるのと
同じようなものだと思うよ。あれは異常だと思う人もいるよね。
でも、甘くて酸っぱいパイナップルが、ピザの香辛料の効いた材料と
組み合わされるのは、本当は...好きなんだ。
H：そう、ギャモンとパイナップルのようなものかな、
あの、厚切りのハムのような...実はさ、今すぐこの授業を終わらせて、
ベーコン入りのハンバーガーを買いにいこうよ。お腹空いちゃったわ。
J：よかったね！ちょうど時間だ。
