■The Joker Paradox
Characters: C - Chan; K - Kana
A GV and a learner in class talking about a movie...
K: Have you ever experienced the feeling of being so lonely
no matter how many friends or connections you make?
C: Wow. That’s such a deep question. Being with others,
but still feeling so lonely and alone.
K: Exactly! Sometimes I feel that way.
C: In those situations, I find it comforting to stop for a while,
take a deep breath, and look at the things and
the people around me. Then I remember I’m not alone.
Besides, no one’s really ever alone. We’re all here on this
big rock floating around in space. All 7.5 billion of us.
(Chan and Kana laugh)
K: When you put it that way, I guess I can’t say I’m alone.
C: Stopping for a while also helps me appreciate even
the smallest details in life.
K: Like what?
C: For example, I like your question because it’s a paradox.
Being with someone but still feeling alone. It sounds
senseless and it contradicts itself, yet it’s so true.
K: Ohhh. So a paradox is a contradiction of itself.
I think I remember something like that from
a superhero movie. The Joker said something like,
“this is what happens when an unstoppable force meets
an immovable object”.
C: Exactly. In Japanese and Chinese, that’s what they call
the “Shield and Spear Paradox”.
