■Deadlines and Desserts
Characters: Y- Yana W- Will
(in the office)
Y: Hey Will, aren’t you going home yet?
W: Nope. I still have to double-check the documents for
tomorrow’s meeting. Aside from that, I have to finish this report
due tomorrow.
Y: Wow, you really are a hard worker. No wonder your hands
are always full!
W: Oh, please. You’re a hard worker, too. I sometimes wonder how
you’re always able to meet the deadlines and not be rattled
about it.
Y: Well, do you want to know my secret?
W: You have?! Please, spill the beans!
Y: There’s another word that starts with D like deadline, and it’s
called “dessert”.
W: Huh? I don’t see any connection between deadlines and
desserts.
Y: There is, actually!
W: Ugh, I’m confused.
Y: You see, when you eat dessert, you eat them slowly and
deliberately, right? And sometimes when you’re excited,
you eat them quickly.
W: Uh-huh…
Y: Say for example, you have a banana split. You can choose
which to eat first. Is it the banana? Is it the cherry?
Is it the ice cream? Which ice cream flavor would you eat first?
W: O-kay…
Y: Right, I’ll get straight to the point: When a task is assigned
to you, you prioritize. Just like picking which part of the dessert
you want to eat first. And then, you follow your own pace.
Usually, you will find the easier tasks faster to finish, and then
do the more difficult tasks afterwards. OR, you may also do the
more difficult tasks first and then the easier ones last.
W: Hmm...
Y: You can decide if you go slow or fast. If you have a lot of energy
and motivation, do the complicated tasks while you still have
the power. And when you have less motivation, you can do the
trivial tasks.
W: Okay, that makes more sense. But I still don’t see how deadlines
and desserts are related.
Y: Well, just think of rewarding yourself with parfait after meeting
a deadline. Maybe that sounds easier.
W: I get it now! Okay, since you let me in on your secret, I’ll treat
you at Dezaato tomorrow once I finish everything.
Y: Cool! Thanks Will!

Y:「deadline(締め切り)」と同じ「D」で始めるほかの言葉に
「dessert(デザート)」があるの。
