■Jack of All Trades
Characters: C - Chan; S - Sakata
A GV and a learner in class talking about skills
C: In your opinion, what are the most important skills needed
by fresh graduates if they want to land their dream jobs?
S: These days, it is a must to be computer literate. Almost
all competitive businesses operate with computers and
machines. It is also inevitable that internal communication
is established via email or some kind of SNS.
C: That’s true. There is a good chance that brick and mortar
businesses will become a thing of the past.
S: But, of course, having communication skills, people skills,
and technical skills is also important.
C: I agree. Speaking of skills, do you think having many skills
or being good in many things is a good quality?
S: I don’t see why not.
C: Have you ever heard of the term, "Jack of all trades".
S: Yes. Someone who’s good with many things.
C: That’s right. But there’s a catch though. The complete
phrase is actually, "Jack of all trades, master of none".
Some people say they are good at many things, but never an
expert at any. In China, they say, "equipped with knives all
over, but none are sharp".
S: Do you mean to say, if we try to be good at many things, the
quality of our work will be mediocre?
C: I guess that’s how people see it.
S: Wow. I would’ve never imagined the downside in being a Jack
of all trades. I guess that argument is valid.
C: Don’t fret, though. A number of the greatest minds who ever
lived are polymaths and Jacks of all trades. There are Elon Musk,
Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, and Marie Curie, to name a few.
S: Ohhh. I guess it’s not bad to be one, then.

表現全部だと「Jack of all trades,
