■Do Dogs Dream?

C: A lot of studies suggest that owning a dog improves the health
and wellness of an owner, as well as their overall happiness.
K: That’s amazing. I have one question, though. Do dogs dream?
C: Ohh. That’s a question a lot of dog owners ask. While asleep,
they see their dogs wagging their tails, barking, or even
moving their legs as if they were running. That’s why they
wonder if they do dream.
K: Exactly.
C: I have read an article by a famous dog food company and
they say that dogs, indeed, dream. They studied the brain
activity of dogs and compared it to that of humans.
They were able to gather substantial evidence supporting
the belief that dogs do dream.
K: Wow. Everything is so clear now.
C: I really like that question because it’s an example of alliteration.
K: Alliteration?
C: Alliteration, as some people refer it as head rhyme and
initial rhyme, occurs when the initial sound of a word is repeated
a lot of times in a sentence. Just like in your question,
“Do dogs dream?”, the d sound is repeated.
K: Initial sound, huh? So is it alliteration if I say
“Ken cooked casserole in the kitchen”?
C: You hit the nail on the head!

■犬は夢を見るの？

講師とラーナーがクラスで犬について話しています。
C: 犬を飼うことは総合的に幸せにしてくれることと同様、
飼い主の健康を向上させてくれるって示唆している研究が
たくさんあるんだ。
K: それは素晴らしいね。ひとつ質問があるんだけど、
犬は夢を見るの？
C: おー。それは多くの犬の飼い主が聞く質問だね。
犬は寝ているとき、尻尾を振ったり、吠えたり、走っている
かのように足を動かしたりさえするんだって。だから、
夢を見ているのかと疑問に思うんだ。
K: まさしく。
C: 有名なドッグフード会社が書いた記事を読んだんだけど、
犬は本当に夢を見るそうだよ。その会社は犬の脳の活動を
研究して人間の脳と比べた。犬が夢を見るという考えを
立証する相当な証拠を集めることに成功したんだって。
K: ワオ。全部はっきりしたよ。
C: この質問、頭韻の一例だからとてもいいね、好きだな。
K: 頭韻って？
C: 頭韻っていうのはhead rymeとかinitial rymeとも言われていて、
言葉の最初の音を文の中で何度も繰り返されるものなんだ。
君がした質問 「Do dogs dream?」のように、「d」の音が
繰り返されているよね。
K: 最初の音だね？じゃあ「Ken cooked casserole in the kitchen」
（ケンはキッチンでキャセロールを作っている）って言ったら
頭韻になる？
C: まさにその通り！
