■Business Talks
Characters: N - Natalie; S - Shin
A GV and a learner during the discussion of the lesson...
N: Since we are already talking about running a convenience
store, I would like to give you additional business
information. (beams)
S: Oh, that would be great! (smiles)
N: There are two types of businesses. First is the retail
business. This is selling items that are everyday
essentials.
S: Essentials? (confused)
N: Oh, 'essentials' has various definitions, Shin. In context
with our topic today, it means items or goods. So everyday
essentials are items that you use everyday like food, water,
and clothes.
S: Got it. So, is Starbucks an example of an everyday essential?
(laughs)
N: Oh my, I think for city people, Starbucks is an everyday
essential. (laughs) But, a more suitable example of retail
business is convenience stores, just like the one in our
dialogue.
S: Oh I see. (nods)
N: The other type of business is novelty business. This is
selling unique items that are not seen everyday. An example
is a candle shop.
S: Ah, I understand. (nods)
N: Now, a novelty shop can be a retail shop if the business
sells merchandise that is used everyday but the design is
one-of-a-kind.
S: Hm? What does 'one-of-a-kind' mean?
N: It is another word for unique. So let's use Starbucks again.
It sells coffee and coffee is an everyday essential. But, it
is also unique because the coffee it sells is only made by
Starbucks company.
S: AAHH! So Starbucks is both types of business. (beams)
N: That’s correct, Shin! Very clever! (beams) So for your
homework, I want you to tell me what kind of business would
you like to do, retail or novelty, okay?
S: Okay. (sigh) That's a little difficult. (sigh)
N: Business talks are always challenging, Shin. But, if you do
think about it, then maybe you can beat Starbucks. (laughs)

S: Essentials?
