■As Far as I Can Throw Them

Characters: C - Chan; R - Rika

A GV and a learner in class talking about motorcycle taxis.

R:The last time I was in the Philippines, I saw some kind of

motorcycle with a passenger seat attached to the side.

Kind of like a tricycle, but it’s motorized.

C:Well, you’re right on the money. Your idea of a tricycle

might be a bit different, but here in the Philippines,

those are what we call tricycles.

R:I see. How much is the fare for those?

C:Base fare is 50 pesos so that’s about a hundred yen,

but it would normally depend on the distance.

R:Very interesting. There were also so many motorcycle riders

wearing the same clothes and have the same helmet design.

C:Let me guess, the color of the clothes and helmets are blue.

R:Yeah. What are those?

C:They’re motorcycle taxis.

R:Ohhh. Just like in Bangkok and Hong Kong. I remember the ones

in Bangkok wear orange uniforms and the passengers aren’t

required to wear helmets. We can just go to a motorcycle taxi

stand and tell the driver where we’re going.

C:I see. Here in Manila, you need to download an app to book

a ride on those motorcycle taxis and it’s a must that both

the driver and passenger wear the proper helmet.

Have you ever tried riding one?

R:Heavens, no! I can’t rely on a random stranger to drive me

on a motorcycle in a busy street. I wouldn’t trust them

as far as I can throw them.

 (Chan and Rika both laugh)
