Training is a valuable medium to know about something
or relearn what you already know, but some people take it for granted
at the beginning. An HRD guru patiently guided his subor-
dinate, but put her in an on-the-spot test right after.
One appreciative governess tells about what she learns
from her students. Ironic? The teacher's the one being
taught? Hmm...
今回は、元大学・大学院で英語学の教授だったLorieが、DCECで
ガヴァネスとして日本人のラーナーさんと英語を学ぶ事について
語ってくれました。
今回は、彼女が易しい英語で書いてくれたので、Lorieのニュアンスを
そのまま感じていただくために翻訳ではなく原文のまま
お送りいたします。
■"Yes, teaching should be fun." by Lorie
Should teaching be fun? You bet!
Teaching should be fun for the students as well as
the teacher. Students should always look forward
to attending class because it is interesting,
entertaining, and engaging.
Teachers should stimulate and sustain students’ desire
to learn by encouraging them to try their best.
When preparing the lesson, the teacher should consider
how to make it fun for himself/herself as it translates
into fun for the students.
Is teaching at Dela Cruz English Club (DCEC) fun?
Definitely!
It’s more than fun. In my six months as governess
at DCEC, I have never experienced any dull moments with
my learners. Every class, every learner offers
a different kind of enjoyment and entertainment.
From the start of the class, as each one talks about
his/her week, reads the dialogue and useful expressions,
learns new words and phrases, shares his/her views
about the given topic, and does the role playing activity,
to the end of the lesson as he/she copies the homework
and next week’s coverage, there would always be
amusing moments that bring smiles and laughter
inside the room. There would always be humorous situations
that break the ice, thus creating a more relaxed atmosphere
during the lesson.
Teaching at DCEC is more than fun. Teaching at DCEC
is rewarding. The rewards are the new found friendship
among the governesses and the learners. At DCEC, we don’t
just treat our learners as students, they are more than
our learners. They are our friends, even our family members.
They are our sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers, uncles,
aunts, cousins.
The rewards are the invaluable information shared
by our learners about Japan - the must see places with
hot springs, waterfalls, beaches, shrines, temples;
the many festivals and celebrations like hanami, Golden Week,
hana-bi, bon festival, summer festival; the unique arts
and culture like tea ceremony, kabuki, calligraphy, bonsai,
flower arrangement; the delicious food like sushi, sashimi,
udon, yakitori, soba; and, of course, the controversial
politics involving former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, new Prime
Minister Yasuo Fukuda, political parties like Liberal
Democratic Party (LDP) and Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ).
The rewards are the learners themselves whose thoughtfulness,
warmth, openness, and positive spirit make every class
at DCEC a beautiful experience to cherish for a lifetime.
Yes, teaching should be fun. It sure is at DCEC!

続いて、English Tipsです。
今回はジュリータが人事業務に挑戦しました。
■"In the Right Ballpark"
Characters: J - Julita; S - Mr. Shima
~Mr. Shima is reconfirming HRD matters with Julita.
S: (referring to the document he's holding) Once again,
please remember that this red document must be submitted
to the social insurance office in early April.
J: (trying to absorb all the information she has received
so far) All right - red to social. Now, how about this
green document? It has a lot of figures on it. If my
reading is right, then it contains the taxes deducted
from salaries.
S: Good. Let me check if you got the formula right.
Of course you can refer to the table of computing taxes
provided by the government.
J: Definitely I'll do that. I couldn't possibly memorize
the formulas without using them regularly. Anyway, let
me see...(after solving the problems) It wasn't easy
at all. All the more I could appreciate how valuable
your skills are at compensation and benefits.
S: And you should have paid more attention to the initial
trainings I gave you. Don't worry, I'll give you
another chance - the final one, though. So, please
seriously learn about it. Let's course through it again,
but feel free to interrupt if something's unclear.
(finished the session)
J: I think I got everything in here now (pointing to her
temple). I can give you the figures in the right
ballpark.
S: Okay. But, let me think about a few complex cases first.
J: Oh! You didn't warn me about that.
S: Did you forget that in business you 'expect the unexpected'?

J：(ここまでに聞いた情報をすべて覚えようとしながら)
わかったわ、赤い書類は社会保険事務所ね。じゃあ、この緑の書
類に関してはどうなの？たくさんの数字が載っている。もし、私
の読みが正しければ、それはお給料から引かれた税金を含んでい
るのじゃないかしら。
S：そうだよ。では君が正しく覚えたかどうかチェックさせてもら
うよ。もちろん、国から渡された税金算定表を見てもいいからね。
J:もちろんそうするわ。それをきちんと使わなければたぶん処理を
覚えられないわ。とにかく、どれどれ・・(問題を解いたあとで)
ぜんぜん簡単じゃなかったわ。給与計算と社会保険に関するあな
たのスキルが大切だとよくわかるようになったわ。
S:それに、君は僕が教えた最初の練習にもっとよく注意を払うべき
だったね。まあ、心配しなくてもいいよ。もう一回、でも最後の
チャンスをあげるから。だから、まじめに学習してね。
さあもう一回やろう。でも何かわからなかったらいつでも質問し
ていいよ。（研修を終えて）
J：私は全てを今ここで得たと思うわ。(こめかみを指差しながら)
私は妥当な範囲内の数字をあなたにあげられるわ。
S：オーケー。でも、もうちょっと込み入ったケースを考えて出題す
るから。
J：え〜!そんなこと聞いてないわ。
S：忘れたのかい？ビジネスにおいては「予期しないことに備えよ」
だよ。
■ 編集後記 ■
経済産業省が10日に発表した特定サービス産業動態統計
（速報）によると外国語会話教室は英会話教室のＮＯＶＡの不祥
事などが響き、28.6％減と8カ月連続の減少となったと日経新聞が
報じていました。現在のグローバル化が進む世界では、英会話力
の重要性が叫ばれ、中国、韓国をはじめとするアジア諸国、東欧
諸国では、英会話教育産業が急激に伸びている中、日本では前年
比30%近い減少。さいわいDCECにはあまり影響がありませんが、
あおりを受けて倒産する英会話スクールが続出しているようです。
NOVAが日本の英会話力向上に与えた負の影響はかなり大きいよう
です。（島）
金木犀の香りがしてきました。この香りがするようになる
と、毎年秋だな〜と感じます。外に一歩でるとどこからともなく
金木犀の香りがしてきて、だからこの季節はちょっとでも外に出る
のが楽しみなのです：）そしてそのうち焼きいも屋さんが通るよう
になっておでんが恋しくなるのですね(？)みなさんはいかがですか？

We don't receive training at work everyday.
It is usually given at the beginning of the employment, new pro-
jects and the like. So, we might as well make the most out
of it, by valuing it every minute. Sometimes, though,
a bit of the formalities come along. But, again, remember
that these formalities, if not overly emphasized, are also
serving their purposes in a company such as valuing superio-
rities and standardizing systems.
Lorie feels happy at work everyday, for she could get
free lessons about Japan from her learners :). No wonder
she's getting more interested in traveling to various
places like Hokkaido.
