　今、新聞を見ているとGDPがプラスに転じたなどと景気が回復傾向にあることが報じられています。このまましっかりと成長軌道に戻ってほしいところですが、電車に乗っていると心配な光景に気がつきました。

東京の企業に行くとき大宮から宇都宮線に乗ると車両の広告スペース半分が空いたままになっています。中吊り広告も横に二枚並ぶはずが1枚しかなかったりしています。

郊外向けの広告がこんなに減ったのかと思いながら銀座線に乗ると銀座線でも広告スペースの半分が空いていました。

実体経済は、まだ厳しさを増している部分もあるようです。

　
さて、今日のダイアログではNicoleのクラスで結婚について話されています。

また、記事ではtwitterで届いたAL GORE元副大統領のメッセージをご案内いたします。

 

■"Look on the Bright Side"

Characters: N- Nicole, M- Maki, T- Toshi, H- Hiro

The topic was marriage and the learners shared their opinions about an appropriate marriageable age.
All learners were married men so it was easy for them to relate to it. After expressing their thoughts, Hiro asked his governess' opinion.

N: Well... (Nicole thinking that she was in the hot seat)
In my opinion, age is not the critical factor when somebody should decide to settle down. It should be based on a person's maturity, right?
H: Well said, Nicole.
M: Oh, that reminds me... Nicole, what happened to that fortune telling class you had two weeks ago?
N: Ah... A learner read my palm. (hoping the learners will not ask for a detailed story)
H: And?
N: According to my learner, I will get married when I reach the middle of my life...
M: You mean... for example, your life expectancy is 70; you will tie the knot around 35?!
(Nicole nodding her head)
T: Just look at it this way, Nicole... (Tom noticing Nicole's uneasiness)
N: Ok, gentlemen, hush up. (making the shh gesture) Tom is about to share his words of wisdom.
　　　Yes, Tom?
T: You should look on the bright side of this situation...
N: Which is?
T: At least you will have a long life, right?
(making the whole class burst into uncontrollable laughter and Nicole turning crimson)
N: Thank you very much for your words of encouragement, Tom.
(patting her eyes dry)

"ポジティブに考える"

登場人物: N- ニコル, M- マキ, T- トシ, H- ヒロ

話題は結婚。ラーナー達は結婚適齢期についての意見を交わしていた。 ラーナーは全員既婚男性のため、この手の話は話し易いものであった。それぞれが意見を述べた後、ヒロはガヴァネスの意見を聞いた。

N: そうね...（ニコルは窮地に立たされたと感じ） 私の意見としては、結婚して身を固めるのに年齢は重要ではないと思うわ。その人がどれだけ成長しているかによるべきじゃ
ない？
H: その通りだよ、ニコル。
M: あっ、そういえば...　 ニコル、2週間前の運勢判断のクラスはどうだった？
N: あぁ...ラーナーさんがね、手相占いをしてくれたわ（ラーナー達が詳しい話を聞いて来ないことを願い）
H: それで？
N: そのラーナーさんによると、私は人生の折り返し地点で結婚するそうよ...
M: それって...例えばだよ、ニコルの寿命が70歳だとすると、35歳くらいで結婚するってこと？！
（ニコルがうなずく）
T: こう考えてみたらどうかな、ニコル...（トムはニコルの不安げな様子に気づき）
N: はいはい、みんな。静かに。（シーッという手振りをし）トムが名言を発しようとしてるんだから。何、トム？
T: この状況をポジティブに考えるべきだってね...
N: というと？
T: 少なくとも、長生きでするでしょ？
　 （ドッとクラスは大爆笑に包まれ、ニコルは顔を真っ赤にする）
N: 励ましのおことばをありがとう、トム。
（目もとを軽くたたいて乾かしながら）

 

■twitterで届いたAL GORE元副大統領のメッセージ

先週編集後記でふれたtwitter。
今、いろいろ学習しています。皆さんへのDCECのメッセージや情報の発信に使えば、interactiveな新しい世界を作ることが出来るのではないかと思っています。

何か新しい試みをするときはまたご連絡をいたしますので楽しみにお待ちください。

さて、そのtwitterで元副大統領で”不都合な真実”をかいて地球温暖化"Global Warming"への警鐘を鳴らしているAL GOREさんのメッセージを受け取りました。

それは、あの北朝鮮に拉致されていたケーブルテレビの記者Laura LingとEuna Leeが開放され、それに対する感謝のビデオとメッセージでした。

英語を使うとこのように日本のニュースでは見られないものを見たり、読んだりすることができるようになります。そして、このようなものを見たりすることが英語力アップにもつながるでしょう。

Message from Laura Ling

Dear Friends,

While in detention in North Korea, isolated and scared, one of the things that gave me strength and sustained my faith was　 hearing about the groundswell of support for Euna and me. You were a part of this incredible movement and for that I will be forever thankful.

Through the letters that I was able to receive, I learned about the many beautiful vigils, the LauraAndEuna.com website,　the petition, the Facebook group, and all the other grassroots efforts to bring us home. I am deeply humbled.

In times of extreme darkness and depression, I thought of all of the people, united together, sending us messages of love　and hope. I envisioned the light of the candles at the vigils and it brightened my soul.

I would not be here today, home and free, re-united with my family (my sister is actually asleep on the couch right by　my side), if not for the support from so many extraordinary people. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Words cannot adequately express my profound gratitude.

While my experience was the most challenging time of my life, I do believe that something beautiful came out of it, and that is the way in which so many people united around a cause for hope and peace.

I’d like to share with you an entry from my journal that I kept during my time in captivity:

Thursday, June 11, 2009 Day 87, 3:00 PM

“I’ve been so overwhelmed and touched by the outpouring of support from so many people. Loved ones, friends, people　I haven’t been in contact with in ages, and even total strangers.
It makes you have faith in humanity. I hope that I would be as good of a friend or human to someone else in a similar situation.”

Euna and I are two of the lucky ones whose story of captivity resulted in a happy ending. But there are so many journalists　imprisoned around the world whose fate is still undecided.
It is my sincere hope that the energy ignited around bringing us home will be harnessed into raising awareness around these　fellow journalists and their struggle for freedom.

■　編集後記　■

 

また、来週から新たな企業レッスンが始まります。今回のレッスンは、本社から工場、支店など日本各地のオフィスのメンバーが参加されることと、それぞれが出張などで忙しくなかなかメンバーが同じ時間に集まることが難しいこともあって、全員インターネットレッスンを行うことになりました。

もうすでにインターネットレッスンに変更して行っている企業もあり、その企業では、一人一人で行うので、出席率も上がりよい傾向が出ています。

時代がどんどん国際化、そしてIT化の方向に動いているのを感じる今日この頃です。（島）

 

 

　　　お盆も過ぎてしまいました。皆さんはいかが過ごされましたでしょうか？私はちょうど休みがお盆とぶつかり、友達が家に遊びにきてくれたので、お気に入り？のブラジル料理のシュハスコ食べ放題のお店へ連れていきました！
何度も行っているからか、嬉しいことにお店の人も私達のことを覚えていてくれて、ちょうどその日はシークレットライブが催されており（普通にネットに載ってあるのでシークレットでもないのですが。。。） ボサノヴァを楽しみながら、たらふく食べることができました！
前にも書いたように、お客さんはみんな知り合い同士のブラジルか日系ブラジルの人達ばかりで、中には初対面なのにも関わらず入ってきたとたん、あいさつで握手してきたお客さんもいて、ここの店員さんもそうですが、お客さんも含め明るくて気のいい人たちが多くて好きです。
次回はなんと流しそうめんライブとやらがあるそう。今ブラジルがちょっと気になっています！（Umi）
