I left my home country exactly two decades ago to study and work in China. After having mastered Mandarin, I believed that gaining knowledge of one more oriental language would make me more competitive in an always-evolving job market. Therefore 12 years ago I came to Japan and ‘forgot to leave’. I still remember the day I arrived at Narita Airport – the 4th of April, 1997. I flew to Tokyo straight from Beijing, and I was quite astonished to see how different spring could look only three hour flight away. Beijing was rather grey and yellow with forsythia in bloom, while Tokyo seemed vivid green and pink. Later on, when I was traveling to school, I did not even notice how commuted the morning train was – all what I did was admiring cherry blossom against a background of the blue sky. Nowadays, after having lived here for so many years, on the one hand, Japan feels home to me, but on the second hand, there is still a huge number of fascinating things to explore. I am always excited to learn something new, discover an unknown place like a hidden tiny shrine in the neighborhood, or meet interesting people and listen to their stories. I doubt I will ever have enough of Japan and it is my dream to write a book on it one day.
I am really looking forward to teaching here at the Dela Cruz English Club, especially after having met the students during my observation activities. Everybody appears so highly motivated and full of passion, not only with regard to learning English but also about their professional career and interests. I have been working as a teacher for nearly ten years and at the same time I have been a student too. Last year I graduated from Waseda University, which was a very inspiring intellectual journey, and I am hoping to go back there one day as a doctoral student. Apart from studying international relations and human rights in less developed countries (I have spent over three months in Cambodia doing research on child victims of human trafficking), I enjoy learning new languages. I am fluent in five languages and now I am starting to learn the sixth one –Spanish. In my spare time I work out in the gym, dance, read non - fiction books and write articles about Asian society and culture.
